Turning Red (2022) dir. Domee Shi

Not just an animated movie for kids.

I had expected to drop a couple of posts this month, but due to personal reasons, I haven’t been able to. I don’t want the month to go by without giving y’all something!

Before I came to Substack, I spent a few years building a podcast that featured movies directed by women, covering contemporary releases back to the silent era of cinema. It was a labor of love—lots of love, but also a great deal of labor, especially when working full-time and being a parent. As such, The Screen Queen has lain dormant for a while.

Instead of written content this week (and possibly this month), I’ll be sharing past episodes, where I sit with various guests to discuss the assigned film for that episode.

Because it’s Asian American Native Hawaiian Pacific Islander (AANHPI) Heritage Month, the first episode I’d like to share is "Turning Red" (2022), a personal favorite that I watch quite regularly at home. This is a double episode where we also talk about what we were expecting at the 94th Academy Awards.

Enjoy!
